A mercury lock for an almirah is a type of lock mechanism that incorporates mercury, typically used as a security feature. Though not very common today, the concept involves using mercury to trigger a locking or alarm mechanism, often as part of an anti-tamper or theft-prevention system.
The mercury could be employed in one of two ways:
Tamper Detection: In some designs, mercury may be contained in a sealed tube inside the lock. If the almirah (cupboard) is tilted or moved, the mercury would flow, completing an electrical circuit that triggers an alarm.
Complex Locking Mechanism: In other versions, mercury might be used to adjust the internal components of the lock in a certain way, meaning that the lock could only be opened when in a certain position, adding a layer of difficulty for anyone attempting to break in.
